As part of a new series on TV channel ‘Yesterday’, the TV company visited Shildon, Darlington and Stockton to meet with local historians to investigate the ‘railway that got the world on track’ and initiated the modern railway age.  Watch the programme and visit a selection of the most important sites along the 26 miles of the Stockton & Darlington main line, which opened on 27th September 1825. On route we will visit Eaglescliffe Station to point out where the S&DR route was originally; Preston Park to see the track bed of the S&DR, A66 Surtees Bridge, site of the suspension bridge over River Tees.
