The Stockton & Darlington Railway is a Historic England Heritage Action Zone
In 2018 the Stockton & Darlington Railway was announced as one of eight new Heritage Action Zones, or HAZ by Historic England. This is part of a five year project to unlock potential investment into the structures and environment surrounding the Stockton & Darlington Railway to create an iconic tourist attraction that will increase economic growth in the surrounding area. We view this as an important step towards having a world class heritage attraction in place by 2025 and to create a lasting legacy for future generations.
Through a program of historical research, archaeological investigation, restoration and aerial surveys the structures and features of the line will be conserved and managed to ensure their survival for future generations. This project is a partnership between the following bodies:
- Darlington Borough Council
- Durham County Council
- Stockton Borough Council
- Tees Valley Combined Authority
- Friends of Stockton and Darlington Railway
- Science Museum Group (Locomotion)
- A1 Steam Locomotive Trust
- Network Rail
- Northern Rail
- Virgin Trains
- Bishop Line Community Rail Partnership
By working with community groups to develop heritage skills, schools resources, training and tourism we hope to help turn around the economy of South Durham and Teesside through this project.
