On the opening day of the S&DR, 27th September 1825, there was great competition for the place closest to the leading train and the first place was taken by J. Lanchester. He lay in wait on the first siding and emerging on to the mainline as soon as the train has passed, held grimly his place of honour all the way to Stockton. (Holmes 1975, 14)
